Woodworking projects involve proper planning and execution. Let us see the different stages of a woodworking project.
Identification of need
There should be a need for woodwork in the first place in order to start a woodworking project. Needs could be materialistic, imaginative or emotional. Try to identify the need as accurately as possible. There are basic needs like food, water and housing. Then there is a satiating need for self evolvement and self expression. Otherwise, people would purchase ready made stuff and not delve into creating one.
A concept
Search for a concept or ideas which are aplenty. Keep your eyes open as you might get an idea from one of the most un-likeliest of places. For some, an idea may be a permanent solution to a problem while for others it may be just a means of self expression. Try to get an original idea or get inspired by someone else’s idea. The concept is the soul for the woodwork creation so it needs to be good.
Plan
Next stage is the planning stage where you take the concept out of your mind and convert it into a sketch, on paper. After the sketch is complete, you can go for a full fledged drawing with complete measurements. Once the drawing is complete, you get the actual dimensions to work with for the project.
Choice of material
You should choose the material carefully. Put in a lot of thought and research in choosing the right kind of material for the project. The choice would depend upon the design, strength, material mix and grain directions on the wood. There are a lot of publications that can help in this process.
Equipment
The equipment to be used in the project should be maintained and calibrated properly so as to be effective. Cutting tools should be sharp; saws need to be sharp and calibrated as well. The measuring tape needs to be of the right size and markings.
Execution
This is that stage of a woodworking project where many mistakes are committed. Do not work when you are not fresh or are unable to concentrate properly. This might result in injuries or errors during the execution stage. Do not be in a hurry to stick things together. Do a dry run instead meaning a trial fit to see that everything fits the way it is meant to be. The joints should not be very tight; the mortise and tenon joints should be made properly. Tenons should be of proper thickness.
Staining
Remove all swirl and tools marks from the surface of the wood piece which would ensure proper cleaning. Use a scraper along with sand paper as it is very useful for this purpose.
Finishing
Staining your project right away could be suicidal. Instead, stain and test pieces of scrap wood for this. You should perform the entire process on this scrap and see the results. Do not leave any part of the process. Finishing should be good enough to deliver the actual end product as desired.
Completion
Polishing the wooden piece is very crucial for enhancing its look. Some piece dry overnight while some take longer durations of time. Use a good buff or polishing agent to give your creation a bright and shiny look. There are many oils and powders available in the market to give you the desired look.
If you follow all these guidelines properly, your woodwork project will be successfully completed.
