Do It Yourself Woodworking: The Basics

It is essential to know proper DIY woodworking techniques to ensure that what you craft looks good and lasts for many years. These techniques will reduce your trips to the hardware store for the replacement materials. Moreover don’t you want that people admire your craftsmanship? There are plenty of do-it-yourself instruction guides in the market. But for people who are beginners and who try to do things on their own, the biggest challenge is the technical jargon that is usually found in these guides. So if you know about it, you can focus on design part. Some of it is:
  1. Miter: It is a joint where two pieces of wood cut at opposing angles and joint in a way that no gap is left.
  2. Cope: In this process the wood is cut along its own silhouette. Coping is usually done for the inner corner joints.
  3. Rip: Rip cut is made in the same direction as the grain of the wood.
  4. Crosscut: This cut is made across the grain of the wood.
  5. Mortise: This refers to removal of an area of wood where other inclusions will be fitted.
  6. Plane: This refers to reducing the thickness of the wood surface.
In DIY woodworking techniques you should know how to make wood joints that are strong enough. The easiest is the butt joint. It is formed by screwing or nailing one end of wood piece to the end of the other wood piece. Making a butt joint is very fast and also effective. Next is the dowel joint where the dowels are used to hold two pieces of wood instead of the nails. The open mortise and tension joint offers immense structural strength. But it is a little difficult to make it. The miter joint is commonly used and is easy to make, but it cannot be used for products which are subjected to weight.

One of the DIY woodworking involves pickling the wood to replicate the old world charisma. Pickling was widely used in the olden times to finish the wood. But it is quite desirable in the contemporary world. So people are giving their furniture that beautiful guise. Pickling works best on ash, oak and pine wood. This is because these woods absorb the finish in the grains. You can go to the market and buy the pickling paint or you can make your own pickling stain. For this you have to add one part of paint to 3 parts of thinner. Earlier, with pickling, people obtained gray and off-white colors. But today you can add different colors to the stain and paint your furniture in pastel hues.

DIY woodworking involves the usage of a woodworking toolkit. There are several types of tools available in market. But you have to decide what you want to do – repair or craft furniture. It is a wise idea to purchase only those tools that are essential for your project. Also the most important aspect of DIY woodworking is safety, for which you must read the instructions for using the tools properly.
